A brief history of Cold Fusion
March 15th, 2006 by Dylan HallLike a whore’s unwanted child, I can’t be sure who the parent of the page i have been dawdling over for the last half hour was - I suspect this site, as he was seen skulking around the premises at the time in question (and is another article on kooky nuclear stuff) but nowhere can I actually find the original link to this bastard son - possibly in the slashdot comments for the aformentioned article? Possibly. Slashdot has surely fathered many such dedicadent sessions of self-gratifying inquisition.
but, while the ancestory may remain a mystery, I would like to further propagate this article, written years ago now but still a lovely little obituary for cold fusion.
It’s one of those subjects, you want it to be true so badly - imagine! the energy of stars, the cleanest conversion of pure mass to energy, powering everything with clean fuel and no waste. such an invention could truely save the world as we know it. If only they could just try it one more.. look! There’s an old chemist who says it works!! surely, if we just give it one more chop..
anyway, it’s a little bit sad but very, very interesting. And I do hope someone keeps trying, even fruitlessly. As long as the costs are low, even if the possibility of success is low it’s worth trying as long as we can afford it simply because the payoff would be so high. It’s the lottery of the human race, the payoff is a clean, affluent and sustainable lifestyle and as long as we can afford the ticket, why shouldn’t we dream?
